There is undoubted truth in a remark made by the philosophical German writer Schlegel: "Formerly it was the fashion to preach the natural, now it is the ideal. People too often forgrt that these things are profoundly compatible ; that in a beautiful work of the imagination the natural should be the ideal, and the ideal natural."
